Grace Tiao
Founder and CEO, E9 Genomics
Grace founded E9 Genomics in 2023 to build Urchin, a scientific reasoning system for biopharma teams. Before that she spent a decade at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, most recently as Associate Director of Computational Genomics in the Medical and Population Genetics program, where she led a team of computational biologists and was the product owner for gnomAD, the largest public catalog of human genetic variation.
Her team built the methods and pipelines behind large-scale sequencing callsets for gnomAD, the UK Biobank and rare disease cohorts, and she directed the production of gnomAD releases. She joined the Broad in its Cancer Genome Analysis group, working on hereditary cancer-predisposing genes.
She read mathematics and statistics at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, after a first degree in English and the history of science at Harvard. In between, she worked as a research assistant with the U.S. Antarctic Program and ran fieldwork expeditions for an environmental microbiologist in New Zealand, which is where she first saw sequencing data being used and decided to learn the mathematics to work with it.
